September 23, 2019It seems counter-intuitive at first until you think about it. The most profitable and successful multiplayer games are ones that you get, and get into, for free. Or we should say, that you can play for free. Once you’re in, there’s stuff that you can buy if you want. And that, as they say, is where they getcha. In multiplayer online free-to-play games, the number of other people constantly engaged is part of the draw. Nobody wants to hang out in a sparsely populated, dead zone. Everybody wants to go to the party where everybody else is already going. Letting players in without charge and pumping up those numbers of engaged human beings interacting with each other makes a whole lot of sense - especially if you give all those players reasonably compelling reasons why they might want to pay a little bit, here and there, for enhancements or features or in-game loot or swag.

September 18, 2019There’s a moment in the movie Pulp Fiction where professional assassin Vincent Vega, played by John Travolta, is waxing philosophical to his co-worker Jules, played by Samuel L. Jackson, about what separates Europe from America and gives each its own distinct flavor. He says, “You know what the funniest thing about Europe is? It’s the little differences...a lot of the same [stuff] they got there, we got here. But they’re a little different.” And it’s those little differences that end up making the biggest and most telling impacts. In a way, this is the story of comparing and contrasting the two big runaway hit competitive first-person shooter (FPS) multi-player sensations of the last few years. They are Overwatch by Blizzard Entertainment and Fortnite by Epic Games. On the surface, there is a lot in common. But it’s the little differences that seem to be the biggest reasons that determine which you might prefer. And the little differences, too, that may spell which one edges out and eclipses the other as time goes on.

September 06, 2019Although the battle royale concept has existed in one form or another since the late 1990s, it wasn’t until the release of The Hunger Games movie in 2012 that the genre really picked up steam in the gaming community. After the release of that film, modders created a server plug-in for the hit game Minecraft called Survival Games. The format then took off when Fortnite Battle Royale and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) were released and millions of players entered the fight to be the last person (or team) standing. The concept is quite simple: players compete for resources, attack each other with acquired guns and ammo, and set out to eliminate everyone else from the arena. Once a player is eliminated, they typically cannot respawn (there are exceptions in certain games) and need to jump into a new match. If you’re the last one standing, you’re the victor.
